Grounded in the vast span of time that flows through the valley, participants open their senses, draw questions from real experiences, and reflect and go deeper over two nights and three days. Here is Cohort 2, in a short film and in the participants' own survey responses.

AboutAbout

What is Tamba Sasayama Academia?

Following precedent alone will not open up an organization's future. About an hour's drive from Osaka and Kyoto, Tamba Sasayama keeps a 400-year-old castle town and its Tamba ware kilns alive. Participants step into the workplaces of farmers, hunters, potters and Shinto priests, and grow into leaders who can take on social challenges while keeping a business running.

#1

Asking the essential question

Open the senses, touch the origin of things, and think from both economic logic and social meaning.

#2

Stepping outside company common sense

Reset habits and assumptions through experiences far from daily work, and practice thinking from zero.

#3

Building ownership

Face your own values and way of life, and find where they meet your company's vision.

Why it's different

How it differs from typical training

Three points Cohort 2 participants raised in the survey.

First-hand, on site, with the whole body

Not a classroom. Stand in the fields, mountains, kilns and shrines, hear directly from the people who do the work, and use your own hands.

Learning through the body turned it into a physical experience, with insights no classroom could give."KさんK.

It asks who you are, not what you can do

How do you see the world, and who do you want to be? The program gives you questions to take home, not answers.

My company has no training that asks how you see the world and who you are. The room it gives a person to grow is far greater."OさんO.

Titles off, person to person

Nobody shares their career or job title at the start. Strangers spend three days together as individual people.

You don't reveal your background at first, so you meet and spend time with each other as people."KさんK.

What they took home

What participants took home

Reading the free-text answers, four insights came up again and again.

The resolve to own it

Seeing Mr. Kira's resolve to carry responsibility made me ask what responsibility I want to carry.Kさん(農業)K. (Farming)
It made me ask whether I have the resolve to be the one in charge.Iさん(農業)I. (Farming)

What a rich life means to me

They don't judge things by a small measure like profit… It made me think again, seriously, about what value I want to offer the world through my work.Kさん(農業)K. (Farming)
What makes a life rich differs completely from person to person. I felt I need to look at my life again, starting from nothing.Kさん(挑戦者の話)K. (Local challenger)

What to keep, what to change

What is tradition? For me, it's what makes you yourself. Put that into words for yourself, your company and your region. Keep it, and change the rest with the times.Kさん(神事)K. (Shinto ritual)
Realizing that change itself is also part of history, I was moved by the people who have kept Tamba ware alive.Iさん(陶芸)I. (Pottery)

Doing each thing with care

The silent meal showed me how much of my day I spend on autopilot. I meet many people, and I want to give each of them more care.Aさん(神事)A. (Shinto ritual)
Taking care over each step became a careful conversation with myself… and helps sharpen my own basis for judgment.Kさん(神事)K. (Shinto ritual)

It wasn't about arriving at a neat answer. It left a positive kind of uncertainty that, as time passes, sinks deep into my heart like herbal medicine."

(on the whole program)

An experience no classroom can offer, to shift how your future leaders and managers see things.

The concept itself is different: updating the OS rather than adding knowledge.KさんK.
At work I have a role and act within it. Here nothing was decided, so I had to start by finding my own role… and felt how hard it is to move toward a goal that way.Kさん(過去に上司が参加したことをきっかけに参加)K. (joined after a manager had attended before)
Using all five senses to take in powerful first-hand experience, the Academia has become an important place of reflection for me.TさんT.
Executives and successors

Tradition and change, succession, resolve. The people who carry this region forward mirror the questions of running a business.

The individual and the region. Market-in and originality. Carrying on a long tradition. I think it offers hints to leaders of established businesses wondering how to change with the times.Aさん(事業承継に関わる経営者を多く支援)A. (advises many business owners on succession)
The talk on product-out versus market-in matched the challenges of my own business stage.SさんS.

Thinking of joining

When you have experience behind you, and the next step is hard to see.

With a fair amount of experience behind me… heading into my forties, I had lost sight of the next step. Taking part opened something up. Above all, I now carry a question: what does a rich life mean to me?Iさん(マネジメント経験のある30代後半)I. (late thirties, with management experience)
I had never had training that asked so deeply how I see the world and who I want to be. It helped me sort out conflicts and contradictions inside me.OさんO.

After the program

After the three days

I can say from the heart that I'm glad I came."

My world turned out to be wider. I came away with questions, and I want to act while facing them."

I want to treasure these connections and join everyone again."

Hearing first-hand from people who live in many different ways."

Turn the questions you took home into your own goals, over six months.

Participants in the Academia take home questions, not answers. What do I really want to do? What do I want to give the world through my work? Back at the office, those questions are easily buried under daily work. We are launching six months of coaching grounded in cognitive science, so each participant can turn those questions into a goal beyond their current reality, and into action starting tomorrow.
